During an interview with Fox News' Jeanine Pirro Trump refused to say yes or no when he was asked point blank whether Spicer will continue in his post. Did he record his dinner with Comey back in January?
Comey has not confirmed Trump's account.
Two White House officials said some of Trump's frustration centers on what he views as unfair coverage of his decisions and overly harsh criticism of press secretary Sean Spicer, as well as deputy press secretary Sarah Sanders, who led much of the response to Comey's firing. She left after about an hour and a half inside the building and declined to comment to reporters.
Spicer also denied that Trump was trying to warn Comey to stay silent about the circumstances surrounding his firing, The Hill reports. "The president has nothing further to add on that", Spicer said.
Abbate is a senior official at the FBI, now responsible for the bureau's criminal and cyber branch. Is the president recording conversations that take place in the Oval Office?
Earlier Friday, a "source close to Comey" told NBC the ousted Federal Bureau of Investigation director "hopes there are tapes".
Meanwhile, the Senate's No. 2 Democrat, Dick Durbin of IL, said Friday that Trump was "dangerous" and that "his credibility has been destroyed". Trump told NBC he had planned to fire Comey all along, regardless of whether top Justice Department officials recommended the stunning step. After meeting with Trump, Rosenstein wrote a memorandum detailing what he considered to be mistakes in Comey's handling of the FBI's investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server as secretary of state. In this case, Mr Trump has the media scrambling to decide which story merits the most coverage. Pirro expressed outright shock at the suggestion-again, there's a century of precedent here-but Trump seemed to be totally earnest (or, at least, the Donald Trump version thereof) in his suggestion that the long-standing tradition be abolished. Trey Gowdy, former Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers and former New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly... Lyndon Johnson also recorded conversations. They can make recommendations, but the president will ultimately make the hiring decision. Trump's comments demonstrated his striking deviation from that practice.
"It's not a matter of resources but independence", said Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller.
Trump and Comey's relationship was strained early on, in part because of the president's explosive and unsubstantiated claims that Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower.
The FBI has never had a female director.
The White House has provided no set timeline for the process of replacing Comey.
Asked, then, if the president thinks "it's appropriate to threaten someone like Comey", Spicer said, "I don't think, that's - that's not a threat. If Comey went along with that, he acted inappropriately too, even though I doubt that is what happened".
The four candidates include Assistant Attorney General Alice Fisher, acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, Sen.
For example, they could be subpoenaed by congressional or FBI investigators probing the Russian Federation scandal or other matters. "[Spicer] could have said 'no.' He could have said 'yes.' He said 'I have nothing for you on that'". But he appeared to be saying the press briefings would perhaps be smoother if he himself was at the helm.
Gowdy is a House representative from SC and a former federal prosecutor.
But McCabe characterized the investigation as "highly significant" and assured senators that Comey's firing would not hinder it. He said there has been no interference so far.
