Oakland Athletics catcher Stephen Vogt prepares to turn and attempt the tag as Texas Rangers' Carlos Gomez (14) dives head-first into home, scoring on a Delino DeShields bunt during the fifth inning of a baseball game, Friday, May 12, 2017, in Arlington, Texas.
Texas had won 5-2 each of the previous two nights, scoring four runs in the ninth inning capped by three-run homers both times.
Texas is coming off a three-game sweep of Oakland after overcoming 4-2, seventh-inning deficits in each of the last two games.
Oakland's Jesse Hahn pitched seven strong innings, limiting the Rangers to one run and four hits and left with the lead. Matt Bush came on in the ninth and with one out, allowed a single before retiring Jed Lowrie on a buy-one-get-one-free 4-6-3 double play.
Carlos Gomez's double moved runners to second and third for Gallo. The 30-year-old Cuban has hit eight of his 12 home runs and registered 15 of his 29 RBIs in 11 games this month.
OUR PREDICTION: Despite the A's struggles to win games that Gray starts, they're a ideal 6-0 in his last six outings versus the Rangers.
Manager Bob Melvin and the medics came out to check on Hahn, but he was able to pitch out of the inning by inducing a comeback grounder from Napoli. I love fading Cashner, but he's actually been pretty solid this season and has allowed two runs in 10 innings at home. From the top of the first inning, it appeared that A's starter Kendall Graveman-whose last outing in Texas started with seven hitless innings-would have no such success today. Matt Joyce's two-run blast to center, also in the fifth, put the visitors up 4-2.
Oakland came back to take the lead in the seventh inning on a single from Trevor Plouffe, who subsequently took a frantic route around the bases to score on Mark Canha's pinch-hit double. "There's a lot of feel-good", manager Jeff Banister said. The Rangers gained only a half-game in the standings during their streak, only because the Astros got rained out at Yankee Stadium and didn't play Saturday. "I try to throw a no-hitter every time I pitch", he said. RHP John Axford (strained right shoulder) is expected to get at least one more rehab appearance. In two of those three starts, however, he's allowed just 4 runs in 13 innings while striking out 10 and issuing just 1 walk. For one thing, the makers of Skittles shipped a few boxes of the sweets to Arlington, boxes that greeted the A's as they arrived in the visitors' clubhouse.
A'S KEY TRENDS: The A's are just 2-9 in their last 11road games and have dropped four of Gray's last five starts. The A's have three catchers for the moment, something Melvin said earlier in the week would not happen.
"There were so many different things we didn't do so right".
"Otherwise it was a flawless day", she said. "He hasn't progressed to the sock throws yet". "We've got a number of guys in that dugout that really do that". He beat the return throw from first baseman Yonder Alonso, but did not slide, and grabbed his hamstring on the way back to the bench. "Twenty bucks to go and sit wherever you want? I for one would be all over that if I had not had the current job I have". Fans using the Pass will be assigned seats through the app on their phone each day.
