Seth MacFarlane is continuing his takeover of the Fox network, but instead of unleashing another pop culture reference-heavy animated series, the actor/writer/producer is starring in his first live action series - and it's a parody of Star Trek.
The series, called The Orville, has just released its first trailer, and it actually looks pretty great.
THE ORVILLE: L-R: Seth MacFarlane, Penny Johnson Jerald, Adrianne Palicki, Halston Sage and guest star Brian George in THE ORVILLE premiering this fall on FOX. As if that's not enough to pique anyone's interest, the pilot was directed by Jon Favreau of "Iron Man"/"Jungle Book" fame. Plus, the wide variety of alien life makes for a much more diverse galaxy than we were given in that movie, offering up plenty of new things to crack jokes about. MacFarlane plays the titular ship's captain and his first officer happens to be his ex-wife, played by Friday Night Lights' Adrianne Palicki. It sounds a lot like a send-up of Star Trek.
While I appreciate MacFarlane's work, I'm not the biggest fan of his style of humour which tends to be rather unsubtle and slapstick-ish - and that's on full display here. In case you were anxious about the show not having any jokes, the log line suggests that the Orville crew will "boldly go where no comedic drama has gone before" and there are jokes about pee pee. Its crew, both human and alien, faces the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the familiar, often humorous problems of regular people in a workplace.
"We're giving you one one last chance". It follows the adventures of an exploratory spaceship.
